What Is Ahead for the South Selmon Corridor

Along the South Selmon Capacity Project (SSCP) corridor, initial trimming and clearing work is nearing completion, and construction activities are beginning in and around many of the underpasses along the project corridor. This early work is necessary to prepare the right of way and advance the project safely and on schedule.

As construction progresses, THEA would like to share what is ahead for one of the most visible parts of the project: the transformation of all 14 underpasses along the corridor.

Improvements Are Coming

As construction progresses, work will take place in and around underpass areas to support the addition of new travel lanes and other project improvements. Once major construction is complete, each underpass will be refreshed with upgraded lighting and sidewalks to improve safety and walkability, complementary ground cover, fresh paint, and stamped concrete accents. Historic locations will also receive brick accents.

Together, these enhancements are designed to create a cohesive, updated look along the corridor that complements the surrounding neighborhoods and draws on design elements from the Selmon Extension.

The MacDill Avenue/Bay-to-Bay Boulevard crossing will see a significant transformation, with plans for a new dog park and community gathering space shaped by public input gathered during the project’s planning process.

Complete landscape designs for the corridor have not yet been finalized. As that phase of the project approaches, THEA will re-engage the community and seek input before finalizing the landscape design.

Protecting the Tree Canopy and Landscaping

THEA is taking a deliberate approach to tree and vegetation removal within the project limits. Before work began, certified arborists evaluated and inventoried the trees within the project footprint. That information helps the project team identify opportunities to preserve trees wherever feasible.

Tree removal is being limited to areas where it is necessary to construct the project. This includes some underpass locations where new bridge piers must be built in the same locations where trees currently stand, as well as areas affected by roadway, utility, and drainage improvements.

All trimming and clearing is performed in accordance with industry standards, environmentally responsible practices and applicable permitting requirements. To further limit impacts on adjacent neighborhoods during construction, THEA will install temporary fencing along portions of the corridor to help manage dust and debris and create a visual barrier between homes, businesses and active work areas.

Once construction is complete, THEA will replant trees and invest in new landscaping throughout the corridor to restore and enhance the urban canopy over time.
