Dear Selmon Expressway Customer,
Have you noticed a longer commute lately? Tampa Bay’s rapid growth is exciting but comes with challenges—like more traffic. The Lee Roy Selmon Expressway has experienced an 80% increase in traffic over the past ten years, and with more people moving to the area, congestion is expected to rise.
To address this, the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) is introducing the South Selmon Capacity Project, which aims to:
Increase the capacity of the existing Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to six lanes (adding one lane in each direction) to accommodate future growth. The project area will extend 4.5 miles from the eastern end of the Selmon Extension to the six-lane section near the overpass at Florida Avenue in Downtown Tampa
- Upgrade lighting, paint, and walkability of the underpasses
- Minimize cut-through traffic on streets like Bayshore Boulevard
- Install new traffic signals, sidewalks, and crosswalks to boost pedestrian safety in South Tampa
We’re also excited to share a new design update that will shorten the construction period, cut project costs, and stay within the existing right of way, all while improving safety and reducing congestion for your commute.
