South Selmon Capacity Project – Latest Updates & Invitation for Discussion
Dear Neighbors,
We are excited to share that the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the South Selmon Capacity Project has been issued, and the shortlist selection process is completed—marking a significant step toward much-needed improvements on the Selmon Expressway.
Project Highlights:
- Increase the capacity of the existing southern portion of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway to six lanes (adding one lane in each direction) to accommodate future growth. The project area will extend 4.5 miles from the eastern end of the Selmon Extension just west of Himes Avenue to the six-lane section near the overpass at Florida Avenue in Downtown Tampa
- Replace the bridge decks
- Lengthen some of the shorter merge areas at ramps to improve safety
- Upgrade lighting, paint, and walkability of the underpasses
- Install new traffic signals, sidewalks, and crosswalks to boost pedestrian safety in South Tampa
We’re also excited to share design updates that will shorten the construction period, cut project costs, and stay within the existing right of way, all while improving safety, reducing congestion for your commute, and decreasing cut-through traffic on streets like Bayshore Boulevard.
As we move forward, THEA is committed to keeping the community informed and engaged. We would welcome the opportunity to meet with your group or Neighborhood Association to provide a project update, answer any questions, and hear your feedback. Please let us know a convenient time for us to connect.
